The aeronautics-security-defense sector is a strategic industry in which France holds a leading position in Europe and worldwide. It is in Paris-Saclay that the majority of research and design activities for aerospace equipment (aircraft, helicopters, civil and military drones) are concentrated to address tomorrow’s challenges. The control of greenhouse gas emissions prompts a significant need for innovation throughout the industry: energy management aboard aircraft, structural lightening, electric propulsion, or the use of green energies. In Paris-Saclay, both public research and private R&D are heavily investing in developing breakthrough technologies.

In a world where new technologies play a predominant role, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (IP Paris) created the CIEDS in 2021 to imagine and develop answers to the technological needs of the Defence sector. The CIEDS benefits from strong support from the French ministère des Armées and the Agence de l’Innovation de Défense. It focuses on the key scientific areas of IP Paris in terms of research, training, and innovation to promote a broad consideration of defence-related issues.
In Paris-Saclay, major industrial groups in the aerospace-defense sector (Airbus, Safran, Thales, Dassault Systèmes…) collaborate with SMEs and deeptech startups in the area, as well as with the two academic poles (Université Paris-Saclay and Institut Polytechnique de Paris) and their researchers, to advance the state of the art in research and jointly design the electric propulsion aircraft of tomorrow. A project of crucial importance aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions worldwide is currently being developed at the Toussus-le-Noble aerodrome in collaboration with Université Paris-Saclay.
The Université Paris-Saclay, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, and other academic partners continually update their curricula to train tomorrow’s professionals in the new scientific and technical skills of their respective fields. An update of programs and infrastructures is necessary for companies in the aerospace-security-defense sector to continue innovating, but also to ensure the use and maintenance of equipment integrating new technologies.
